Power lines are noisy. PLC is built for that. Power lines were built to move electricity—not data. So what does it take to turn them into reliable communications channels? It starts with designing for uniquely challenging communications environments. Motors, switching power supplies, relays, and other equipment can introduce significant interference. At the same time, changing impedance, frequency-dependent attenuation and impulse noise can dramatically affect how signals travel across the wire. Those changing channel conditions aren’t always just obstacles—they can also contain useful information about what’s happening on the electrical network. Modern PLC is designed specifically for these conditions. Techniques such as OFDM, forward error correction, interleaving, adaptive tone mapping, and advanced noise-mitigation allow PLC systems to maintain reliable communication even as channel conditions change. And because PLC transmits low-power, high-frequency signals over the same conductors that carry electrical power, properly designed systems can communicate without disrupting normal power delivery—all while meeting applicable EMC requirements. This is what makes PLC different: it isn’t simply another communications technology adapted to work over power wires.
