Authors: Franny Yeh, Advantech and Robert Green, AMD At the core of every modern slot machine lies a specialized, mission-critical engine: the gaming computing platform. Advantech’s DPX gaming computing series is purpose-built to address this demanding environment, consolidating game logic execution, dedicated peripheral communication, and tamper-proof security into a single industrial-grade platform However, casino equipment manufacturers in 2026 face tightening margins, shorter content refresh cycles, and rigorous regulatory compliance, including GLI-11 standards and the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). To overcome these challenges, Advantech and AMD have partnered to deliver a high-efficiency computing foundation built on the AMD Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series APU, providing the core processing performance and hardware security features needed to design compliant, next-generation cabinets. Reducing Reliance on Discrete GPUs Historically, driving multiple 4K displays with complex gaming animations required a dedicated discrete graphics card. This setup introduced thermal bottlenecks, elevated power consumption, and increased bill-of-materials costs. The AMD Ryzen Embedded 8000 Series processor resolves this architectural hurdle. Fabricated on an advanced 4nm process, it integrates up to 8 “Zen 4” CPU cores (16 threads) and high-performance AMD RDNA 3 graphics within a configurable 15W to 54W TDP design. Compared with the previous-generation AMD Ryzen Embedded V2748 processor, the Ryzen Embedded 8845HS processor provides a significant architectural advancement: Greater integrated graphics capability: 12 AMD RDNA 3 compute units operating at up to 2.7 GHz, delivering up to 2.9x the theoretical peak FP32 compute throughput of the 7-CU, 1.6 GHz integrated graphics in the Ryzen Embedded V2748 processor. 1 Higher memory bandwidth: Dual-channel DDR5-5600 provides up to 89.6 GB/s theoretical peak bandwidth, 1.75x the 51.2 GB/s theoretical peak bandwidth of dual-channel DDR4-3200. 1 Next-generation CPU architecture: 8-core, 16-thread “Zen 4” processing with up to 5.1 GHz boost frequency, compared with the 8-core, 16-thread “Zen 2” architecture of Ryzen Embedded V2748. 1 Native Multi-Screen Output: Driving up to four independent 4K displays via DisplayPort Dual-Mode (DP++) 1.4a, with integrated VCN 4.0 media engines supporting AV1 encode/decode and 8K HEVC decode. This graphics performance leap allows manufacturers to run premium multi-screen cabinets directly from the integrated GPU, eliminating the need for an external dGPU in many cases, lowering overall cabinet thermals, cutting hardware costs and extending platform longevity. On-Device Intelligence with a 16 TOPS AMD XDNA NPU Next-generation casino cabinets require local intelligence to optimize operations. The Ryzen Embedded 8000 processor integrates an on-chip AMD XDNA NPU delivering 16 TOPS of dedicated AI performance, allowing real-time edge processing without draining CPU or graphics bandwidth: Predictive Maintenance: Analyzing real-time mechanical telemetry to identify potential printer and bill-validator failures before floor downtime occurs. Tamper & Fraud Monitoring: Detecting hardware intrusion and behavioral anomalies directly on the device. Player Analytics & Vision AI: Processing anonymous demographic and engagement metrics locally, ensuring raw video data remains secure on-box. Purpose-Built Gaming Engineering: Advantech DPX-S460 and DPX-M280 Advantech translates this processing power into gaming reality through its dedicated DPX single-board computer architectures, eliminating daughter boards and cabling failure points: DPX-S460 gaming platform / DPX-S2460 gaming system: Engineered for slot machines and Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs). It incorporates 32/32 discrete digital I/O, 10 COM ports (supporting ccTalk, ID003, RS485, and TTL), 8MB of battery-backed SRAM for non-volatile soft metering, and an 8-loop intrusion processor with a 256-event log.
