By DR. MOH KOLBEHDARI , Senior Director of IC/Packaging, Socionext America Automated material handling systems are usually treated as the fab’s logistics layer, moving lots between tools as quickly as possible. Dr. Moh Kolbehdari of Socionext America argues that view is becoming incomplete, because every wafer carrier holds material with a continuously developing manufacturing history. Whether a lot should move can depend on more than location and tool availability: whether it is still inside its queue-time window, whether an available tool is qualified for that product and recipe revision, or whether an earlier inspection result has changed the valid route. The fastest physical route, he notes, is not always the technically correct one. Kolbehdari calls for tighter integration between AMHS, MES, APC, metrology, scheduling and analytics so that movement commands reflect manufacturing evidence. Done well, he argues, that reduces unnecessary holds, avoids invalid routing and stops material from moving deeper into the flow before a problem is recognized, an increasingly important safeguard as AI takes on a larger role in factory decisions.
