Variscite and SecEdge Inc. have announced the availability of firmware-based Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 security across Variscite's i.MX system-on-modules (SoMs). The solution integrates SecEdge's SEC-TPM firmware implementation into the application processor's security architecture, enabling device authentication and cryptographic key protection without requiring a separate TPM chip. TPM 2.0, defined by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), provides security functions for device identity, secure boot, and cryptographic key management. SecEdge's SEC-TPM is a TCG-compliant firmware TPM (fTPM) that runs in the OP-TEE secure world using Arm TrustZone technology. On Variscite's i.MX 93 and i.MX 95 SoMs, the implementation can leverage the processor's security architecture, including NXP's EdgeLock Secure Enclave as the root of trust. This approach allows developers to integrate TPM 2.0 functionality using existing processor resources, reducing the need for additional components and hardware redesign. The integration also addresses security requirements associated with the European Union's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Since September 11, 2026, manufacturers must report actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe security incidents within 24 hours, followed by a full notification within 72 hours. The act's broader requirements apply from December 11, 2027, including secure default configurations, vulnerability management, security updates, and conformity assessment. SEC-TPM provides OEMs and system integrators with a standards-based mechanism to establish device identity and protect cryptographic keys. Because OEMs can integrate it into existing designs, it offers a path to enhanced security without a board redesign, provided the device supports secure firmware updates. Variscite complements the solution with maintained board support package (BSP) branches containing security updates, documentation covering secure boot and TPM integration, and targeted product longevity of seven to 15 years. SEC-TPM is available for new and existing systems, subject to platform compatibility and support for secure firmware updates. Within Variscite's pin-compatible module families, developers can also upgrade to higher-performance modules while retaining the established security architecture, helping reduce redesign effort across product generations. The firmware TPM 2.0 implementation is integrated, documented, and available for download through Variscite's Developer Center for its i.MX 6, i.MX 7, i.MX 8, and i.MX 9 SoM families.
