Molex has introduced VersaBeam Mini, a 16-fiber expanded-beam optical connector aimed at increasing fiber density in AI and hyperscale data centers. The connector combines a very small form factor with Molex’s Expanded Beam Optics (EBO) technology to address space, thermal and serviceability constraints in high-density systems. For eeNews Europe readers working on AI infrastructure, optical networking and data center hardware, the launch highlights how connector design is evolving to accommodate rapidly increasing bandwidth and fiber counts. It also points to growing demand for optical interconnects that can simplify maintenance as rack densities rise. More fibers in less space VersaBeam Mini packs 16 fibers into a 3.5 x 9mm footprint and provides three times the density of Molex’s VersaBeam 16 connectivity. According to the company, the format supports up to 3,456 fibers in a standard 1RU panel. The connector is designed for co-packaged optics, optical backplanes and front-panel switch applications, where available panel and chassis space is increasingly limited. Molex also claims a ninefold reduction in “blast radius” by using 16-fiber granularity, allowing technicians to isolate, re-route or hot-swap individual 16-channel lanes without affecting larger groups of connections. An optional mass-insertion feature allows up to nine VersaBeam Mini connectors, or 144 fibers, to be engaged with a single push. The aim is to speed initial rack installation while retaining finer-grained serviceability later. “As optical densities per rack grow exponentially, network architects are hitting hard physical walls in both scale-up GPU clusters and scale-out network fabrics,” said Trevor Smith, general manager, Optical Connectivity, Molex. “With VersaBeam Mini, we are providing a ‘less is more’ solution that pairs a VSFF footprint with zero-touch EBO technology, delivering less contamination risk, reduced downtime and a smaller blast radius without needing specialized technical expertise.” Automation and eye safety VersaBeam Mini uses the groove-based 3M EBO ferrule design, removing the need for guide pins and holes. Molex says this makes the connector better suited to robotic pick-and-place equipment and could also reduce part count and bill-of-materials costs. The expanded-beam design reduces sensitivity to dust and debris between connectors, with Molex claiming deployment, inspection and maintenance overhead can be reduced by up to 85%. The connector also incorporates inherent laser eye safety for technicians carrying out routine servicing or upgrades. Limited customer sampling is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with volume production planned for the first half of 2027. Molex is also demonstrating VersaBeam Mini alongside co-packaged optics, optical circuit switching and external laser source technologies at ECOC 2026 in Malaga, Spain.
