Altera Corp. is extending defense-grade capabilities across its Agilex FPGA and SoC FPGA portfolio to support aerospace and defense systems requiring high performance, reliability, and long-term availability. The expanded offering covers applications ranging from embedded processing and edge computing to high-bandwidth communications, sensing, and electronic warfare. Defense-grade Agilex devices are designed to operate across temperatures from −55°C to 125°C. Leaded-ball and ruggedized packaging options resist temperature cycling, vibration, and mechanical shock, helping maintain reliable operation in demanding environments. These characteristics support mission-critical electronic systems in which thermal extremes and mechanical stress can affect component reliability. Altera also highlights the U.S.-based wafer fabrication of Agilex FPGAs as a factor supporting supply-chain resilience. Domestic fabrication also supports aerospace and defense programs that require supply continuity, long service lives, and predictable component availability. Combined with the extended portfolio coverage, these capabilities are intended to help developers reduce design risk and maintain platform support over long operational lifecycles. The defense-grade offering will span the full Agilex portfolio, allowing developers to select devices according to performance, power consumption, and integration requirements. The range spans low-power, cost-optimized Agilex 3 FPGAs , mid-range Agilex 5 FPGAs , high-performance Agilex 7 FPGAs , and Agilex 9 Direct RF-Series FPGAs . This scalable approach supports different system architectures without restricting developers to a single performance class. It also provides a common product family for designs that may need to evolve as mission requirements change, simplifying device selection across embedded computing, communications, sensing, and electronic warfare applications. The portfolio is built on Altera's HyperFlex architecture, which is designed to increase clock frequencies and processing throughput. Hyper-Retiming and Hyper-Pipelining help balance pipeline delays and shorten critical logic and routing paths, improving timing performance in demanding digital designs. Initial shipments of defense-grade Agilex FPGAs are scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, with software support targeted for Quartus Prime Design Software version 27.1. Aerospace and defense developers can contact their local Altera sales representative for further information about device options and availability.
