Trumpf is under strong pressure from ASML to reduce costs. The German family-owned company is now transferring series production of power supplies from Freiburg to Warsaw, Poland. EUV drive lasers will also benefit from these savings. Trumpf considers production in Asia too risky. The investments semiconductor manufacturers have to make in chip equipment are approaching 50 percent of total capital expenditure for advanced wafer fabs. ASML’s customers consider 30 percent more than enough. That’s why the lithography manufacturer is putting considerable pressure on its suppliers to reduce costs, while simultaneously demanding strong growth. With the revenue growth spurt of more than 30 percent announced by ASML for 2027 and 2028, Trumpf’s revenue from EUV laser systems is expected to exceed 1 billion euros in the coming financial year (2026/2027). In the past fiscal year, the company’s revenue from EUV laser systems was 791 million euros. “I can tell you that the pressure on ASML is passed on to us every day, 365 days a year,” said Trumpf CEO Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller during the presentation of the company’s 2025/2026 financial results in Ditzingen. “They put pressure on us, but we’re ready.” “I can tell you that the pressure on ASML is passed on to us every day, 365 days a year,” Trumpf CEO Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller said during the presentation of the company’s 2025/2026 financial results in Ditzingen. On her right-hand side sits Berthold Schmidt, who’s responsible for EUV and electronics at Trumpf. To what extent can Trumpf contribute to the requested cost reductions? Berthold Schmidt is responsible for EUV and electronics (primarily power supplies and power electronics for lasers and plasma sources). He points out first of all, in line with ASML’s reasoning, that customers will primarily benefit from higher productivity. “A system for the same price, but with double the productivity. That’s what we consistently work on together with ASML,” he says. Reducing the bill of materials is another challenge. Schmidt says it will be very difficult to simply reduce system costs, especially in “the current delivery and supply situation, with rising component prices.” Europe Because of the strategic role of EUV, ASML and Trumpf are very reluctant to move production of strategic components to Asia. Veldhoven does encourage most suppliers to assemble as many modules as possible in countries such as Singapore, Korea and Taiwan. For the crucial EUV source and optics, however, things are different. “We deliberately keep EUV technology in Europe. Production and development activities relevant to our intellectual property take place here in Germany,” Schmidt states. Trumpf Electronics, which generated revenue of 458 million euros in the 2025/2026 financial year, primarily develops and manufactures power supplies for lasers and plasma generators. “In the short and medium term, I don’t see a need to move that production to Asia because it’s a complex technology and our Eastern European supplier network offers very good conditions. We’ve compared the costs with those of the Asian supply chain, and when we take into account the cost of bringing the products back to Europe, the savings we could achieve in Asia are more or less wiped out.” To actually reduce production costs, Trumpf is working on transferring these products to Warsaw. The Electronics branch in Freiburg will focus much more on new product introduction (NPI). This development usually takes place in close cooperation with equipment customers in the semiconductor industry or with the company’s own business units that need these kinds of advanced power supplies, such as the CO 2 laser division for metalworking and EUV for chip manufacturing. These are all three- to four-year projects in which Trumpf has to deliver customized solutions. Only after the first small batches roll off the production line in Germany will larger production runs move to the Polish capital. As part of the current
